Elmo and Big Bird Strike A Pose For Fashion

Here’s something for the fashionista moms and for the kiddies. Harpar’s Bazaar celebrated the 40th Anniversary of American children’s pop-culture icon, Sesame Street, with some of the best designers in the biz. Sesame Street was transformed into Fashion Avenue as Elmo and the gang played super models for the day:

Oscar de la Renta is of course known for his classy, ubic chic womens wear and couture dresses. Oscar the Grouch says he’s not giving up his grunge style anytime soon.

Check out all the fashion fun in the video:

For the 4th of July holiday, President Obama gave a birthday shout out to Sesame Street and it’s contributions:

So what are Sesame Streets big plans to bring in their 40th birthday?

* The 40th anniversary will be Nov. 10, 2009.

* This season, Sesame will use CGI animation for the first time, in Abby segments called “Flying Fairy School.”

* The next two seasons will introduce a science curriculum focused on nature.

* Someone asked what the hardest letter to feature is. You guessed it: X. They’ve had numerous discussions about how to move beyond x-rays and xylophones.

* In Sesame’s tradition of pop-culture parodies for the parents, next season they’ll do Mad Men.

- from TIME’s TV critic James Poniewozik

Now I know I’m not the only excited to see Sesame Street’s version of Mad Men! Lol! Cool family programming – love it!

Paper Dolls On Steroids: Looklet.com

I’ve been a fan and user of Polyvore for quite sometime, and its ability to let you design almost anything from a room, to artwork and of course, fashion sets. The other day I discovered the new kid on the digital block, Looklet.com. Recently launched this past February, Looklet is a virtual styling studio where you can mix and match fashion to create your own personally styled looks.

Looklet_Application

The best part: you actually get to play stylist, choose the wardrobe, and dress a model to create a look that is as haute as an editorial photo from a fashion magazine! What more could a fashionista ask for?! Of course I couldn’t wait to give it a whirl, so here are a couple of looks I created for Stylemom:

 Paper Dolls On Steroids: Looklet.com

 Paper Dolls On Steroids: Looklet.com

 Paper Dolls On Steroids: Looklet.com

Looklet.com is still in beta version and still growing the wardrobe database. I would love to see this site evolve to not just include different models of different ethnicities, but also different models with different body types more representative of real women. It would be an awesome way to style and shop if you could select a model of your body type, choose a model close to your skin tone/complexion, style your entire outfit, then click to purchase. Now that would be the utopia of online shopping!

Could this be what’s on the horizon for Fashion 3.0? Let’s keep our fingers crossed, and in the meantime, get your style on and create some looks at Looklet.com.

Street Style Immortalized: The Sartorialist Book

So in the wee hours of the a.m. in a bout of insomnia, I went online and purchased the much anticipated “bible” of street style photography, The Sartorialist by Scott Schuman.

TheSartorialist_Book

Just released yesterday in the U.S., this book is a must have for all, not just the fashionistas that read Scott’s Blog or those who work in the fashion and photography industry. If you’re a professional, educator, or simply an enthusiast of history, culture, anthropology , or even sociology, The Sartorialist is a definite book to add to your reading repertoire.

One of our favorite irreverent agent provocateurs, the cavalier yet brilliant music man, Kanye West, summed up Schuman’s work best:

“Scott doesn’t just take pictures, he captures emotion. He is not just a photographer. He’s a historian marking the feelings of this generation one photo at a time.”

- Kanye West

So go get some style inspiration and pick up a copy of The Satorialist, and be sure to check out these other great style and fashion resources on Amazon:

Give Your Designer Purse a Face Lift with Avelle BBOS Handbag Repair

In these economic times, many folks are shopping smarter, and extending their wardrobe’s longevity by using tailors more often to fix clothing, and utilizing shoe repair services so those favorite shoes can walk a little longer. If you’ve invested in one or more designer handbags, don’t donate that old stained or worn designer bag to good will, or sell it to a consignment shop or at a flea market just yet. Show your purse some love and give it a face lift with Avelle BBOS’s new Handbag Repair service.

I’m a huge fan of Avelle’s rental service and discount designer shopping. Their new repair service range from $45-$175 and includes: cleaning, repairs, stain removal, leather reconditioning, parts replacement, deodorizing, handle reconstruction, and more.

AvelleLVRepairStained lining cleaning before and after

I recently gave Avelle’s repair service a test run with my favorite Prada goat fur messenger bag. Now I love this bag, as it was a Mother’s Day gift I’d given to myself five years ago. I had taken pretty good care of my bag, but the outside was starting to get a bit dingy and the inside lining was getting a little grimy.

AvelleBagBEFOREPrada Goat Fur Messenger bag – BEFORE

When I received my bag back from Avelle’s service, it was wonderfully packaged (I’m a huge critic on how things are packed and shipped ;) ) and it looked amazing and even smelled like new!

AvelleBagCleanAFTERAFTER

So instead of looking to replace that old stained Gucci bag, save some $$ for your shoe fund and have Avelle’s Handbag Repair make that bag just like new for the fraction of the cost of a new designer bag! The best part – STYLEMOM readers get an additional %20 off any handbag repair service!!! Just write STYLEMOM on your order form and you will receive this exclusive discount! Now that’s a recessionista good deal!

Check out the video of this amazing service, and be sure to give your designer bags the love and care they need with Avelle’s Handbag Repair Service.

STYLEMOM Watch: Whitney Houston – The Return of a Diva

Whitney_Houston(Official photo from Whitney Houston Facebook page)

Bobbaaaaaay!!! Yessss! The Diva is baaaaaaack! And she’s looking fantabulous! This fall Whitney Houston releases I Look to You, her first studio album since 2002. Arista Records marks the event with this showstopping “Sizzle Reel” :

Ms. Houston with her #1 music man Clive Davis, CEO of Sony Entertainment, recently held listening parties in the UK, NYC and L.A.. Check her out at the UK event. Many fashion and entertainment newsies were buzzing as Whitney wore the same gray scale leopard print Dolce and Gabbana dress that Madonna wore to another event in Milan. Don’t get me wrong, I love Madonna, but it’s pretty obvious Whitney won this battle of the stylemoms hands down.

In NYC, Whitney looked absolutely fabulous in all black and a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti pumps:

You can also check out the video and watch what the diva had to say about her comeback during the NYC listening party here on MTV.

Remember, “back in the day”, Whitney Houston was revered as not only a soulful songstress, but a style icon. Also holding her own in acting and modeling since she was a teen, let’s not forget Whitney has been a long time muse for designer duo Dolce & Gabbana for many years:

I am definitely one of the millions of people rooting for Whitney to have a successful comeback journey. Watch the video for the first single of the album “Million Dollar Bill” and be sure to get the album September 1st!
