SM:      In your experience as a stylist, what is the biggest challenge most moms/women face when in comes to fashion and styling their wardrobes?

LS:         The biggest challenge is getting women, especially moms, to get out of their ruts, clean their closets stick to what looks best on their body type.  So many moms give all their time and attention to their families and work, that they seem to forget about themselves.  It is very important for women to take the necessary time to build a wardrobe, learn how to do their own hair and make up and dress well everyday.  I always start with  Closet Rehab, where we get rid of all the clutter that doesn’t work, and build a functional wardrobe that fits and looks great.  I also see that so many women don’t know how to shop and fall into buying something on sale or because it is the trend.  Not every trend works for every woman.  It is better to spend more money on one great piece than waste money on something you will never wear.  I always tell my clients to become their own fashion editors. Learn what looks best on you for your body type and life style and stick to it.  There are lots of ways to incorporate the many trends we see each season.

Another obstacle is for busy women to find the time for themselves.  I know women that only allow themselves 15 minutes to get dressed in the morning…well if you are showering for 10, that gives you 5 for hair, makeup and selecting an outfit.  Find the time and get into the habit of dressing yourself every morning.  Once you do it a couple of times it will be second nature.  Having a great functional wardrobe will make dressing easier and you will be less overwhelmed.   Remember, even effortless style takes effort!!

SM:        What advice can you give to new moms, who may be having difficulty adjusting their wardrobe because of a change in body type/shape post-baby?

LS:           This is such a great question.  New moms especially need to feel good and look good.  More often than not our bodies change and we are usually heavier.  A few tips:

  • Give yourself ample time to go back to your original weight and don’t feel like you have to fit right back into your skinny jeans.
  • Buy shape wear!  Instantly makes you feel thinner.
  • Exercise.  It will help get the added weight off and give you more energy.
  • Invest in a couple of great basic pieces that are your current size and that you can possibly have altered when you loose the weight.  Also, look for fabrics with stretch such as a great pair of jeans and a man tailored blouse.
  • Do NOT Wear Maternity clothes…the last thing you want after 9 months of being pregnant is to continue to look pregnant.
  • Focus on your assets.  Now is the time to wear things that will complement your new bust line or curvier hips.
  • Find things in your existing wardrobe that still fit and move them to the front of the closet…i.e., sweaters, knits dresses etc.
  • Do Not try to squeeze into something that doesn’t fit.
  • Buy some great shoes and accessories to kick up your simple temporary wardrobe.  Changing up the accessories will give the same outfit a whole new look and will be part of your permanent wardrobe as well.
  • Now more than ever, make an effort.  Get dressed first thing in the morning, and fix your hair and makeup.

SM:        What are the 3 things every woman should have in her wardrobe?

  • Great LBD….Little Black Dress
  • Great fitting pair of jeans
  • Crisp White man tailored blouse

SM:         What have been your guidelines with your daughter in terms of fashion/style, and what’s your advice to her and other girls/young women on keeping a healthy attitude about their body image?

LS:            My daughter is 10 years old, but she has always loved fashion and dressing.  I am fortunate that we pretty much see eye to eye on things.  But from the very beginning I feel it is important to help your daughter develop not only a sense of style, but the self confidence to feel good about themselves.  When Giuliana was younger I would choose 3 outfits and let her make the final decision.  This way she felt that it was her choice, but I ultimately made the final approval.  I also recommend to moms with young teenage or tween daughters to really take and interest and be patient.

Before you set out to shop with your daughter, talk about her style, look at magazines and websites for styles that she likes.  If your daughter likes something that is inappropriate, don’t just say no, offer alternatives.  For example, a too sexy lace top, show her how the lace trend can look age appropriate as a super cute skirt worn with leggings.  Heel height is another issue for tweens.  Every girl is dying to get into a pair of really high heels.  Before you say no, show them just how many cute 2” wedges or kitten heels look great.  If you approach this touchy topic with a really positive attitude and give them the time and attention they need, it will be a great experience.  Make it fun and if you need help, don’t be afraid to enlist a great sales associate or personal shopper from the store.  Many stores offer personal shopping free of charge.  Also, be sure your budget is set before you go shopping and remind your daughter she can find lots of great stuff within your budget.  Lastly, mom, don’t be afraid to say no.  You have the final say when your daughter is young and you are buying her clothes.

With regard to body image, I think for a long time girls felt pressure to feel really thin.  In the recent years I have actually seen a trend where moms are more concerned because their daughters are gaining too much weight.  Being healthy and fit at a young age is so important.  It sets the tone for the rest of your life.  If your daughter doesn’t have a good body image she may not feel great in any clothes.  I always say the best parenting skill is to lead by example.  If you want your daughter to have a healthy fit body and good self image, be sure you are doing the same for your self.  In addition to finding your own sense of style with your clothes, it is important to be healthy and fit.  This will also lead to doing things together.  Cook healthy meals, play a game of tennis, go power walking or try a yoga class.   You will be doing something that is great for you as well as your daughter.

Celebrity Stylemom Watch: A ‘Window Seat’ View of the Bare Erykah Badu

She’s a mother of three and a semi-eccentric soulful songstress who has created a repertoire of funky tunes and smooth “baby-making” music. Erykah Badu is known for her amplified bohemian chic style and is one of the leading ladies of neo-soul.

ErykahBaduBABY Celebrity Stylemom Watch: A Window Seat View of the Bare Erykah Badu (image: BrooklynVegan.com)

Her latest video for her new single, “Window Seat” (featuring Qwestlove), is ruffling some feathers, especially in her hometown of Dallas.

In the guerilla style video, Erykah walks down the street where John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and strips down to her birthday suit revealing the word “evolving” written in bold black letters on her back. At the conclusion, she is shot dead similar to JFK’s untimely demise. The nudity, and guerilla tactics have Dallas officials and some folks in a bit of a huff. However, Erykah baring it all was not your typical hollywood meaningless plot of adding shock value to get buzz. It was not a gratuitous case of her spreading her legs and throwing her crotch up against prison bars to prove she was a female, ala Gaga style. (Don’t get me wrong, I love the shenanigans and performances of Lady Gaga, but as a parent of a teen, I’d prefer that my son watched Erykah Badu’s video over Gaga’s “Telephone”, as”Window Seat”  provides an actual teachable moment unlike Lady Gaga’s video. )

Check it out for yourself:

**3.30.10 Update – Universal Music Group has pulled the video from Youtube so watch the full screen version here:  http://www.erykahbadu.com/ (click the ankh symbol to watch)

If you’re familiar with Erykah as a personality, it should be no surprise that our favorite herbal tea drinking music star would make a statement video given the signs of the current times we’re struggling in. This isn’t the first time Ms. Badu has exposed herself to the public. A little over a year ago, Erykah and Jay Electronica live tweeted the birth of her third child. It’s obvious this was done to make a statement. In it’s simplicity, the video is overflowing with symbolism from shedding superficial layers of oneself to evolve almost like the metamorphosis of a butterfly, to exposing oneself to the world, a world that can be so afraid of what’s under those layers that it tends to destroy people and things that are raw, true, or unknown. As the famous line from A Few Good Men goes: “You can’t handle the truth!”.

I could go on and on, as this video would have been a prime candidate for a topic in my film critique class in college. But the real compelling question is, did you notice her bodacious perfectly round booty! At the age of 39 and three children, Ms. Badu is maintaining a great shape. If anything ladies, this should serve as inspiration to get in shape for those bathing suits ;) . In the words of Tupac – I ain’t mad atcha Erykah!!!

I’ll definitely get the album for my new ipod. Click below to get ‘New Amerykah, Part Two: Return of the Ankh’.

Behind the Scenes: Project Runway Back in the Big Apple

ProjectRunwayTim Heidi Behind the Scenes: Project Runway Back in the Big Apple

Our favorite fashion frenzy is back! Project Runway has returned home to the Big Apple and kicked off Season 7 on Lifetime. Heidi Klum, now with baby #4, continues to rock the runway. The new diverse groups of competitive and skilled designers have brought their fashion talents and elements of major drama!!! Of course, we are all ready for those fabulous designs that are innovative and new, but let’s be honest we like watching the fierce competition that separates the wolves from the sheep. Let’s just admit that we secretly love to see the guys and gals get to their breaking points, sorry designers!

ProjectRunwayDesigners Behind the Scenes: Project Runway Back in the Big Apple

Christiane, Pamela and the emotional Ping have already been axed from the group; but we can see there is still plenty of trouble brewing in the workroom and on the runway. The first challenge was to personify the overall vision and talent of each individual and the capabilities to take their skills to the next round. Oddly enough, seeing Christiane’s runway look had a familiar identity to the dress Qristyl designed on Season 6, which we all remember the judges hated and obviously are still keeping strong to their guns.

On the second episode “Fashion Farm”, designers had to harvest creations from potato sacks aka burlap. For this challenge the “Models of the Runway” were their chosen clients and had lots of input on their style and vision for the final product. Model Elizaveta’s face said it all, with the embarrassment of her entire butt hanging out on the runway from Ping’s country fair nightmare. Ping seemed to be lost in translation when it came to understanding the challenge and what the judges were seeking from the garment. Pamela’s design was also lacking the wow factor, though she did transform the burlap into looking like denim, it wasn’t enough to hide the all the flaws on her poorly fitted dress.

Museum worthy gowns from classic designers, such as Dior and Yves Saint Laurent were the staple of last week’s challenge, designers studied the masters craftsmanship and were told to turn their inspiration into a high end luxury garment. Team leaders were assigned and collaborations were born. The designers were thrown a curve ball when half way through the challenge they were told to create a second design, a ‘look for less’ on a $50 budget. The second look had to be inspired from one of the other teams high end designs. While Ping drove Jesse insane with her “less by the book” design technique, Anthony and Seth also had trouble agreeing on a solid design. At one point their dress was having a Mickey D’s moment in the workroom. In the end, Mila won for her dominant perfection of separates and Ping was ponged for lack of strength in her team leadership.

We have seen some fresh and new ideas so far from the designers and will have to keep their fashion thinking caps on in order to become one step closer to being the winner of Project Runway. Let’s not forget the Bluefly.com Accessory Wall is also back and stocked with fierce “must have” pieces, providing the essentials to finalize the designers look. Check out this behind-the-scenes video of the Season 7 designers snatching and matching accessories from the Bluefly.com Accessory Wall as they try to “make it work” for the runway!

Elmo and Big Bird Strike A Pose For Fashion

Here’s something for the fashionista moms and for the kiddies. Harpar’s Bazaar celebrated the 40th Anniversary of American children’s pop-culture icon, Sesame Street, with some of the best designers in the biz. Sesame Street was transformed into Fashion Avenue as Elmo and the gang played super models for the day:

Oscar de la Renta is of course known for his classy, ubic chic womens wear and couture dresses. Oscar the Grouch says he’s not giving up his grunge style anytime soon.

Check out all the fashion fun in the video:

For the 4th of July holiday, President Obama gave a birthday shout out to Sesame Street and it’s contributions:

So what are Sesame Streets big plans to bring in their 40th birthday?

* The 40th anniversary will be Nov. 10, 2009.

* This season, Sesame will use CGI animation for the first time, in Abby segments called “Flying Fairy School.”

* The next two seasons will introduce a science curriculum focused on nature.

* Someone asked what the hardest letter to feature is. You guessed it: X. They’ve had numerous discussions about how to move beyond x-rays and xylophones.

* In Sesame’s tradition of pop-culture parodies for the parents, next season they’ll do Mad Men.

- from TIME’s TV critic James Poniewozik

Now I know I’m not the only excited to see Sesame Street’s version of Mad Men! Lol! Cool family programming – love it!

STYLEMOM Night Out: Winning Cool Mom Points With Asher Roth and Kid Cudi

Many of you who read this blog or follow me on twitter, probably know that I love music and will rock out to anything from alternative/grunge/rock-n-roll to hip-hop and reggae. Earlier this summer, I took my little guy to a dance party Questlove of The Roots, and this time it was his older brother’s turn for a music outing. So I threw on my 7 for all Mankind jeans, black and silver Pumas, my favorite Wu-Tang t-shirt, and Prada messenger bag to get ready for a night of Gen-Y and Millenial mayhem with my teen son and his BFF. We headed to Philly for one of the last concerts on the Great Hangover Tour featuring Asher Roth, Kid Cudi and 88-Keys.

My son and his BFF had a blast hanging out backstage at the show. They even proclaimed this experience as the best part of their entire summer, and if they had to write a “what did you do for the summer” story, as they did in elementary school, the entire story would have been about this one night – (definite “cool mom points” collected for the rest of 2009 ;) ). Special thanks to my favorite music man and 88-Keys for making it all happen.

Here’s my Stylemom pics from all three artists to add to your ipod:

Asher Roth: refreshing to see a young man/artist with thought and purpose in his lyrics, check out the video for Just Listen (acapella)

Kid Cudi: This beat is hot, and makes you want to shake your a$$ – Cudi Spazzin’

88-Keys: Soulful, groovy, and the title is just perfect for this post ;)m.i.l.f.

STYLEMOM Watch: Whitney Houston – The Return of a Diva

Whitney_Houston(Official photo from Whitney Houston Facebook page)

Bobbaaaaaay!!! Yessss! The Diva is baaaaaaack! And she’s looking fantabulous! This fall Whitney Houston releases I Look to You, her first studio album since 2002. Arista Records marks the event with this showstopping “Sizzle Reel” :

Ms. Houston with her #1 music man Clive Davis, CEO of Sony Entertainment, recently held listening parties in the UK, NYC and L.A.. Check her out at the UK event. Many fashion and entertainment newsies were buzzing as Whitney wore the same gray scale leopard print Dolce and Gabbana dress that Madonna wore to another event in Milan. Don’t get me wrong, I love Madonna, but it’s pretty obvious Whitney won this battle of the stylemoms hands down.

In NYC, Whitney looked absolutely fabulous in all black and a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti pumps:

You can also check out the video and watch what the diva had to say about her comeback during the NYC listening party here on MTV.

Remember, “back in the day”, Whitney Houston was revered as not only a soulful songstress, but a style icon. Also holding her own in acting and modeling since she was a teen, let’s not forget Whitney has been a long time muse for designer duo Dolce & Gabbana for many years:

I am definitely one of the millions of people rooting for Whitney to have a successful comeback journey. Watch the video for the first single of the album “Million Dollar Bill” and be sure to get the album September 1st!

Soulful Summer Sounds With Style: Diane Birch & Maxwell

You know how when you smell bar-b-que it brings on a sense of nostalgia and summer memories? Music also ignites those feelings, and this summer, there are two soulful artists whose songs will weave there way into the memories we make for summer 2009.

First, representing the ladies, we have Diane Birch and her debut album, Bible Belt, with vocals produced by Miami’s “Queen of Soul” Betty Wright (I was your baby baby baby baby babaaaaaaay ;) . Pianist, writer, vocalist, and sounds that are reminescent of Stevie Nicks and Carly Simon, Diane Birch is a young talent to watch. (You must check out the killer cover of the old club song “What Is Love?” she did.)  It was quite a treat when I was invited to her album release, last month and had a chance to hang with the songstress:

Our fab hostess, Barbara Jones (One2One Network), my peeps, Daniel Glogower (Skyscraper Management), and fellow digital divas, Katja Presnal (Skimbaco Lifestyle), Lindsay Maines (Rock and Roll Mama), and Isabel Kallman (Alpha+Mom).

Finally, representing for the men, the music stylings of the ever so talented, king of neo-soul, Maxwell *swoooooon!* ;) . It’s been a long awaited 8 years since his last album, and Maxwell’s debut single “Pretty Wings” has helped propel BLACKsummer’s Night to Billboard’s #1 spot. Keeping with the sign of the times, Maxwell serves up thought provoking yet fun and funky tunes like “Help Somebody” – check out the video excerpt:
