SUMMER…Despite All The Fun It Can Be A Headache

From heat, to beach traffic, to screaming kids at the beach, although many of us love summer, certain activities can bring on a headache. Here are a list of common headache causes of the season:

Brain Freeze — Although it usually lasts no more than five minutes, an “ice cream” headache is a common summer ailment. Cold – as in the ice cream suddenly, rapidly consumed – causes blood vessels in one’s brain to dilate, resulting in intense sudden pain. The best way to avoid this is to try and not have the icy cold substance touch the roof of one’s mouth. Relieving the short term painful effect of brain freeze, one can immediately warm the roof of the mouth with room temperature water.

Dehydration – Even mild dehydration can trigger a headache. With soaring temperatures and humidity, it is recommended to drink at least 1 to 2 liters of water a day and decrease intake of caffeine. This is especially important while lying in the sun for hours and not getting enough fluids. After a long day at the beach, one can combat dehydration as well as headache pain by drinking the required eight ounces of fluid to activate the pain relief from Dr. Mauskop’s Migralex TM, a fast acting aspirin-magnesium combination.

Excessive Sun Exposure — The burning heat and intense light from the sun is a major culprit, especially when coupled with a lack of fluids. Keep these simple tips in mind: wear polarized sunglasses to cut glare, chose light colored clothes, and wear a wide-brimmed hat that can help block the burning rays of the sun.

Hyperthermia — This occurs when the body produces or absorbs more heat than it can dissipate. When the temperature climbs and the body reacts by overheating, painful headaches and other symptoms can result. Of course, to avoid drastic overheating, wear light clothing instead of darks and always wear a wide-brimmed straw hat. But Dr. Mauskop cautions that extreme overexposure to sun can start with a headache but if the body is not cooled down adequately, a headache can end in heat stroke or worse complications.

Scent Sensitivity — Although there are many highly perfumed sunscreens and insect repellents on the market, Dr. Mauskopsuggests one try to avoid them and select fragrance free sun and insect control products instead. Why? Strong scents are a headache trigger under any circumstances and in the hot, still air of summer these essences intensify and can cause a surprising amount of devastating headache pain.

Sleep Imbalance – Getting too little or too much sleep disrupts normal body rhythms. Such a change in pattern can trigger a headache. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day – if the Summer season means waking up with the Sun, then go to bed when the moon rises. Watch what you eat and drink. Those fun, frothy alcoholic drinks – Pina Coladas, Cuba Libres, Margaritas, Frozen Fruit Daiquiris – are common headache triggers. And so are nitrates often found in our favorite cookout and picnic foods: hot dogs and cold cuts.

Exercising in Extreme Heat – Strenuous activity in hot weather can trigger a headache. The everyday run in the Summer’s heat, or an indoor treadmill session without air conditioning, can spur a headache. To avoid compromising oneself physically in the Summer heat and still enjoy a workout, it is critical not only to modify the exercise routine to avoid overexertion but to stay aware of the body’s reaction to the Summer’s heat. Stay hydrated. Acknowledge your limits. And when a headache sets in, have a fast acting pain reliever on hand, like Dr. Mauskop’s MigralexTM.

The new headache remedy MigralexDr. Alexander Mauskop, claims that it will act fast to keep you feeling fabulous during this warm and sunny season.  I have not had the opportunity to try the Migralex, but plan to as I am prone to headaches from high humidity.  Please post your comments about how it works for you.

Celeb Stylemoms Strut Their Stuff at Heart Truth Show

The East Coast was dealing with a major blizzard, the second in one week, but I was preparing to attend my first fashion show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.  I never would have thought that my job as an Account Executive with a Project Management company would’ve landed me tickets to a show, but since my client Tylenol was a major sponsor, I scored an invite to the Heart Truth runway show at Bryant Park! :) Getting to see a show at the final season at the tents  was all I could think about, and I was not about to let a foot of snow keep me from getting to New York from Philadelphia. Our train was delayed but we got there just in time…although I would quickly learn that fashion shows NEVER start on time.

There was so much energy in the room, and many fabulous women and style moms were about to walk the runway for an important cause. Finally the show kicked off with Kristin Chenoweth wearing a Daniel Swarovski dress. Next up was “Desperate Housewives,” Felicity Huffman in Oscar de la Renta, who stopped to kiss her hubby, William H. Macy, sitting in the front row.  Raven Symoné came out looking fabulous wearing a Tadashi Shoji gown. At the end of her walk, Raven tripped and lost a shoe, so she kicked the other one off nonchalantly and proceeded to strut her stuff.

Real Housewife of New York, and soon to be mommy, Bethany Frankel came out to the Supremes song Baby Love, showing off her baby bump in a Stylemom favorite, Isabella Oliver dress. There was more “high-heel drama” when another fab mom, olympic swimmer, Dara Torres came out in a Rachel Roy dress with her heels in her hand.

Kim Kardashian came out wearing Marchesa and blowing kisses to her boyfriend Reggie Bush who was in the front row.  Mom mogul, Kimora Lee, walked the runway in a dress from her Kouture by Kimora line.  Last but certain not least was our favorite hot mom, Heidi Klum in a dress by John Galliano and she looked absolutely stunning as always.

Other celebrities who worked the runway were Elisabeth Hasselbeck in Donna Karan, Estelle in Zac Posen, Jordin Sparks in Badgley Mischka, Mamie Gummer in Michael Kors, Pauley Perrette in Rebecca Taylor, Regina King in Tracy Reese, Robin Roberts in J. Crew Collectiom, Joan Collins in Stephane Rolland and Valerie Harper in Pamella Roland.

Dance Party With Your Kids and Questlove at Sundae

Sundae Klub Kid

Where can you dance to a world renowned DJ and party with your kids at the same time for free? None other than Sundae (Philadelphia, Brisbane-Austrailia, and soon Los Angeles). The Sundae events (that are actually on Sunday) during the day include Sundae Klub Kids followed by a nighttime event for adults. Produced from the brilliant mind of Lee Jones, Sundae creates a kid friendly, fun and funky vibe where parents, children, family and friends can go get their club on with some of the best DJ’s on the planet.

Since my oldest son was “too cool for school” and went to play tennis with his friends, I packed up a portable chair, my camera, and my youngest Jon, and headed over to Sundae Philadelphia where Questlove from The Roots was the guest DJ – partay! Woot Woot!! I’d like to especially thank Quest for making my lil’ guy feel like the newest honorary member of The Roots Crew! ;)

JonandQuestcrop

The scene was vibrant at The Piazza at Schmidt’s with vendors, restaurants, art galleries, yummy water ice and hula hooping!

meJonHoolaHoopcrop

This was my sons first time ever hula-hooping. He was frustrated in the beginning, but after his 2nd and 3rd attempt at keeping the hoop above his hip, and with the crowd cheering him on, he became a pro! He got so psyched he played “big dog” and hula-hooped with two! And he was serious!! lol!

Jon2Hoopscrop

One of the best parts of the Sundae events, is their incorporation of Healthy Klub Kids. It’s primary goal is to give parents inexpensive and fun ways to help keep kids happy and most importantly, healthy. Let me tell you, hula-hooping is a definite ab workout (I felt it the next day), and combine that with a few hours dancing, you’ll definitely burn alot of calories and get in some great exercise. You can read more about Healthy Klub Kids, get some tips and even submit/share your own tips and healthy kids recipes here.

Check out our photos of the fun day we had:

Special shout out to my fellow party peeps Tayyib from two.one.five magazine and Stacey of flygirrl who were also in the place to be.

One-piece Swimsuits Bring Sexy Back to the Beach

This summer season’s, one-piece swimsuits are bringing sexy back. I haven’t seen one bikini yet, that I like as much as any of the fun, funky, sophisticated and stylish one-piece suits that are out right now. I admit, in my twenties as a young mother, I thought wearing a one piece would make me seem “old” and “frumpy”.  Back then, the selection didn’t have the perfect balance of fierce, sexy and classy as it does today. Now, I think about function more than before. With the right pair of breezy palazzo pants or a flowing skirt or wrap, many one-piece swimsuits can transition from beach wear to pool party outfit for instant and effortless beach chic. You don’t have to worry about changing or putting a top on with a little more stomach cover. (And let’s face it ladies and gents too – most folks, especially mommies have some level of self-consciousness about their tummies ;) )

AlmenaSwimsuit(Almena Swimsuit at Swimwearboutique.com)

If you don’t already, make sure you incorporate a kick-ass ab workout along with a smart eating habits and exercise to your weekly regimen, because swim suit or not, a healthy body leads to a healthy and happy you.  So check out some of my favorite looks, and let this serve as your motivation to bring your sexy back to the beach in one of these fantabulous and haute one-piece swimsuits:
