Tales From The Laundry Room: The Good, Bad, And The Dirty

WiskLaundryTales Tales From The Laundry Room: The Good, Bad, And The Dirty

With back to school, comes a whole host of things as a fashion editor and mom. Not only am I scrambling to shop for school clothes and school supplies, but I also have little league football games and events, as well as planning for New York Fashion Week. I’m feeling anxiety even as I write this post! Between, school, football, and fashion week, the laundry room becomes total armageddon the first few weeks of September.

LaundryRoom Tales From The Laundry Room: The Good, Bad, And The Dirty

The many outfits I pull to wear to shows and events, my teen son’s gear, as well as the daily dirty, grass and mud-stained football gear of my little one.

JohnFootball Tales From The Laundry Room: The Good, Bad, And The Dirty

With an insane schedule, I don’t have time to sit and scrub stains. So, when Wisk announced the release of  Wisk with Stain Spectrum™ Technology, I didn’t dread going to war in our laundry room as much, check out the release video:

It makes me think, when did laundry become such a production??! Remember the “gold old days”, when it seemed like the only stain most folks worried about was ring around the collar? lol!!

Be sure to check back for more Wisk Laundry Tales as we dig deep into the science of stains, and try to dig ourselves out of the beastly pile of laundry ;) .

About Wisk:
The Wisk brand has a rich history. Wisk was launched in 1956 as the first liquid laundry detergent and ultimate stain fighter. Wisk’s liquid form was incredibly innovative because it offered the convenience of pre-treating and washing without all of the hard work. Before the introduction of liquids, consumers pretreated stains by making pastes out of powder!
In 1968, the brand developed the extremely successful, “Ring Around the Collar” campaign that ran for over thirty years. This campaign capitalized on America’s frustration with those pesky collar stains, and made Wisk a household name synonymous with powerful cleaning. The Wisk “Ring Around the Collar” campaign won many awards, and even still has recall with consumers today!
In 2010, the makers of Wisk re-launched the brand. New Wisk features new packaging, a new formula, and a new advertising campaign focused on the Science of Stain Fighting. Wisk is about to change the way you look at stains forever! For more information, visit www.Wisk.com.

Fashion For A Good Cause: Hero in Heels

HeroinHeelLogo Fashion For A Good Cause: Hero in HeelsOn June 10th, the Wish Upon a Hero Foundation, an online nonprofit that grants requests to people in need, held its 1st Hero in Heels fashion show and celebrity shoe auction at the Trust Building in Philadelphia. Founded by my former colleague Dave Girgenti, Wish Upon A Hero Foundation created the Hero in Heels program which benefits women affected by cancer and other  life-altering diseases.

Hero in Heels collected signed celebrity donated shoes and then auctioned them off online and at the live event. The money raised from the auction grants the wishes of women who are suffering with cancer, including the purchase of wigs, prosthesis, as well as helping with their basic necessities. Over 20 pairs of designer shoes were auctioned off last week during the Hero in Heels charity auction that raised more than $9,600 for women battling cancer. Most shoes went for $200 on the auction, with the exception of Jennifer Anniston’s Jimmys which were auctioned for $800. Other notable celebs donating signed shoes were Jessica Biehl, Taylor Swift, Estelle, Scarlott Johansson, and Ali Larter.

Wish Upon a Hero’s Dave Girgenti tells the Philadelphia Inquire:
“I wanted to put together a fund-raiser for women using something they were very passionate about…and we know that women are passionate about shoes.”

The runway show featured collections by local Philly designer brands Walish Gooshe, SAVA, and Carmelita Couture.

Super Hero Summer Scent: SJP NYC

As the solstice approaches and summer officially gets underway, many of you may still be on the hunt for a new summer fragrance. After getting “Carried” away with the Sex and the City 2 craze, and trying out the new perfume by Sarah Jessica Parker (courtesy of Coty), SJP NYC, I will definitely be adding it to my rotation of summer fragrances.

sjp nyc Super Hero Summer Scent: SJP NYC

I must say, I have never been a big fan of celebrity perfumes, but SJP NYC has a wonderful lightly floral but sweet scent that goes well with my body chemistry. The signature SJP NYC scent is a delightful concoction of strawberry accord, gardenia and creamy musks, and the fragrance collection has one huge selling point for me. The perfume cuff is not only super stylish, but it is functional and befitting for a superhero like Wonder Woman.

SJPNYC CUFFshow Super Hero Summer Scent: SJP NYC

I won MAJOR mommy cool points when I showed it to my 7 yr. old superhero obsessed son. He saw the bracelet and said: “mommy I like your bracelet”. I held it up in my best Wonder Woman pose and opened it, and if you could have seen how big his eyes got as he became so excited he began to actually stutter: “Ma-Ma-MOMMYEEE! you-you-you-you’re…COOL!!!”. The little guy is such an ego boost sometimes. I love Linda Evans and the original Wonder Woman, but when I put on the SJP NYC cuff, I’d like to think of myself as more of a modern Wonder Woman — ‘Wonder Woman 2.o’ if you will, sexy….

STYLEMOM Night Out: Sex And The City 2

Finally! What so many women have been waiting for, Sex And The City 2! How excited was I to be invited by SJP NYC perfume to a special Wednesday night screening! I decided to show off a little ‘Sex and the City style’, and wore my Carrie meets Charlotte dress – a Taylor melon colored jacquard sheath complete with roses and gold studs ;) , then grabbed one of my Jersey style mom bff’s, Jenny from the block, and hopped on a train. (Thank the lord we lucked out to got on a new double-decker NJ Transit train, I loathe the old trains!)

We arrived at the AMC theater just in time, totally “sfitzing” from the heat and in need of a serious snack. How ecstatic were we to be greeted by the SJP NYC team with a much needed drink, SJP popcorn, and the famous “Carrie” cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery :) !

The day before I read a pretty harsh review of SATC 2 at USAToday.com, so unfortunately, I went having very low expectations but I didn’t let it tarnish the excitement of getting see Patricia Field’s latest wardrobe creations. I was pleasantly surprised that the movie overall was pretty good, not great, but good enough for me to get my fix of fantasy, fashion, and female camaraderie and worth a girl’s night out. I laughed, I cried, I said “WTF is wrong with you Carrie!” – all worth the price of a movie ticket.

SATC2Balcony STYLEMOM Night Out: Sex And The City 2

Claudia Puig at USToday.com wrote:

Tasteless ‘Sex and the City 2′ Stumbles Badly

“An insult to the memory of the cleverly written show and its celebration of friendship, it’s a slap in the face for the four gal pals (often photographed at unflattering angles) and an affront to Muslims….

The premise has always trafficked in the superficial. But the TV series dipped beneath the surface and interlaced the fashion forays with honest, wry discussion about relationships. Carrie may have had a fairy-tale wardrobe, but her love life endured the ups and downs of reality. And the bond among the women felt authentic. Very little in this second movie feels genuine.”

An “affront to Muslims”? Seriously? No. First of all, Samantha has historically been offensive to anyone and everyone in any other location other than NYC (remember the trip to Atlantic City as an example). If you really want authenticity in her character, how could you possibly put her in another country and expect her to be politically correct? She’s not politically correct in her OWN country, and that’s a major part of her character. Furthermore, Miranda was more than PC and promoted respect of the culture continuously throughout the movie, so I think Ms. Ping went a little overboard on this criticism. Yes, the cultural differences were acknowledged, but as a woman of color, I tried hard to find something offensive, and I did not. You can also flip the coin on this one and say the movie depicted American women as pompous, insensitive, egotistical jerks with a cultural superiority complex. If you’re an American woman, would you be offended to be portrayed that way? Sounds far fetched in my opinion, so let’s not judge a light-hearted movie as if it were an HBO documentary.

The “critics” didn’t like the first SATC movie and most certainly didn’t like the sequel, but let’s keep it in perspective – the movie was NOT made for YOU critics! It was made for the fans of the show, fashionistas, mommies, cougars, etc. – viewer categories in which most critics don’t even fit in! I personally, majored in film in college, and have worked on film sets, and I always wonder, how many of these movie critics ever actually worked in film production? hmmm….  Women around the world will always share a common bond of motherhood and the continuous struggle of redefining gender roles in ALL cultures. And by the stats we review on Stylemom.com, Arabic women, and women from predominantly Muslim countries, have an affinity for style and fashion just as much as many other women in the world. So I say to the “critics”: take a chill pill and put a double-shot in your cosmo, it’s not that deep. **Shout out to our readers in the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and the middle east! xoxo!! ;)

Now, regarding the authenticity and the question of being genuine, mommies, the scene with Charlotte and Miranda discussing mommy issues and stress, has happened to almost ALL of us (I cried as did other mommies who attended). We have mommy meltdowns on a regular basis, and sometimes it calls for a chat with our BFF, a good cry, and a few martinis – been there done that, that’s real life – i.e. genuine. I cried again when Miranda became so excited and emotional to make it on time for Brady’s science fair. That scene pulled at the heart-strings of my working mother’s guilt – i.e. genuine.

I won’t give too much away for those who still have not seen the movie, but was it worth a girls’ night out? Totally! The performances, the fashion, and the fabulous soundtrack! Ladies make sure you check out Carrie’s Closet and join Stylemom.com as we continue to get “Carried” away with a “fantabulous” SATC2 prize pack!

Celebrity Stylemom Watch: A ‘Window Seat’ View of the Bare Erykah Badu

She’s a mother of three and a semi-eccentric soulful songstress who has created a repertoire of funky tunes and smooth “baby-making” music. Erykah Badu is known for her amplified bohemian chic style and is one of the leading ladies of neo-soul.

ErykahBaduBABY Celebrity Stylemom Watch: A Window Seat View of the Bare Erykah Badu (image: BrooklynVegan.com)

Her latest video for her new single, “Window Seat” (featuring Qwestlove), is ruffling some feathers, especially in her hometown of Dallas.

In the guerilla style video, Erykah walks down the street where John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and strips down to her birthday suit revealing the word “evolving” written in bold black letters on her back. At the conclusion, she is shot dead similar to JFK’s untimely demise. The nudity, and guerilla tactics have Dallas officials and some folks in a bit of a huff. However, Erykah baring it all was not your typical hollywood meaningless plot of adding shock value to get buzz. It was not a gratuitous case of her spreading her legs and throwing her crotch up against prison bars to prove she was a female, ala Gaga style. (Don’t get me wrong, I love the shenanigans and performances of Lady Gaga, but as a parent of a teen, I’d prefer that my son watched Erykah Badu’s video over Gaga’s “Telephone”, as”Window Seat”  provides an actual teachable moment unlike Lady Gaga’s video. )

Check it out for yourself:

**3.30.10 Update – Universal Music Group has pulled the video from Youtube so watch the full screen version here:  http://www.erykahbadu.com/ (click the ankh symbol to watch)

If you’re familiar with Erykah as a personality, it should be no surprise that our favorite herbal tea drinking music star would make a statement video given the signs of the current times we’re struggling in. This isn’t the first time Ms. Badu has exposed herself to the public. A little over a year ago, Erykah and Jay Electronica live tweeted the birth of her third child. It’s obvious this was done to make a statement. In it’s simplicity, the video is overflowing with symbolism from shedding superficial layers of oneself to evolve almost like the metamorphosis of a butterfly, to exposing oneself to the world, a world that can be so afraid of what’s under those layers that it tends to destroy people and things that are raw, true, or unknown. As the famous line from A Few Good Men goes: “You can’t handle the truth!”.

I could go on and on, as this video would have been a prime candidate for a topic in my film critique class in college. But the real compelling question is, did you notice her bodacious perfectly round booty! At the age of 39 and three children, Ms. Badu is maintaining a great shape. If anything ladies, this should serve as inspiration to get in shape for those bathing suits ;) . In the words of Tupac – I ain’t mad atcha Erykah!!!

I’ll definitely get the album for my new ipod. Click below to get ‘New Amerykah, Part Two: Return of the Ankh’.

First Lady Michelle Obama Promotes Healthy Kids in Style

The fact that first lady, Michelle Obama is constantly making news in the fashion world, does not mean we forget that the #1 style mom of the free world, not only has her own sense of style, but she is also highly intelligent and continuously active in issues of children and families. Her latest efforts has been in the trenches of the fight against obesity in children.

On Tuesday, styling in a L’Wren Scott ensemble from the Spring 2010 Madame du Barry collection, Mrs. Obama spoke at a meeting of the Grocery Manufacturers Association in Washington, D.C.

First Lady Michelle Obama Promotes Healthy Kids in Style

The first lady urged the major players in the food industry, including Kraft Foods, General Mills, Coca Cola Co., and Del Monte Foods, to “step up” their efforts in development of and promoting healthier products to our children.

MobamaGMA2 First Lady Michelle Obama Promotes Healthy Kids in Style

“We need you not to just tweak around the edges but entirely rethink the products you are offering, the information that you provide about these products, and how you market those products to our children.”, stated Mrs. Obama. She then went on to discuss the recent controversial topics of sugar and salt:

“While decreasing fat is certainly a good thing, replacing it with sugar and salt isn’t.” she urged. “This needs to be a serious industry wide commitment to providing the healthier foods parents are looking for at prices they can afford.”

*Applause* for that last statement. I mean really, the fact that healthy and organic food is more expensive at the grocery store is counterintuitive in terms of trying to promote a healthy lifestyle to our children. It’s clear we are in a crisis and something has to be done. The stats are absolutely appalling:

- The United States is the most obese country in the world followed by our southern neighbor Mexico at #2 and the UK at #3.

- The current economic crisis could exacerbate the obesity epidemic. Food prices, particularly for more nutritious foods, are expected to rise, making it more difficult for families to eat healthy foods.

- In 30 out of our 50 states, 30% or more children are overweight or obese.

- 10% of infants and toddlers are dangerously overweight.

- Adult obesity rates now exceed 25% in 31 states and exceed 20% in 49 states and Washington, D.C. Two-thirds of American adults are either obese or overweight.

(sources: 2009 F as in Fat Report – Healthyamericans.org and NationMaster.com)

The media attention to Michelle Obama’s fight against obesity doesn’t stop here. On March 22nd, the first lady will be seen on her third Newsweek cover since her husband took office. The issue will highlight her Let’s Move Campaign in an article titled “Michelle On a Mission”.
